Author: Brian Keene
Copyright Date: 2003

Plot

"Nothing stays dead for long. The dead are returning to life, intelligent, determined... and very hungry. Escape seems impossible for Jim Thurmond, one of the few left alive in this nightmare world. But Jim's son is also alive and in grave danger hundreds of miles away. Despite astronomical odds, Jim vows to find him - or die trying.

"Joined by an elderly preacher, a guilt-ridden scientist and a ex-prostitute, Jim sets out on a cross-country rescue mission. Together they must battle both the living and the living dead... and the even greater evil that awaits them at the end of their journey."

Setting

Modern-day Atlantic coast. The imagery is average but enough to tell every day scenery. My imagination made up for the lack of details until I could picture the action like a movie.

Characters

Jim - A desperate father trying to reach his son before the zombies do.

Baker - A Research scientist that blames himself for the existence of the zombies.

Frankie - An ex-prostitute suffering drug withdrawal that finds a reason to live in a world of the dead.

Martin - An old preacher that believes in the word of God and Jim's quest to save his son.

Overall

The Rising was a great read. I am a BIG fan of Zombie movies and this lived up to my expectations. If you're looking for something unlike a Zombie movie then I doubt you will enjoy this book. That said, it does have an aspect of originality. It offers an explanation on why Zombies rise from the dead but still nothing on how they operate afterwards! The explanation is why I clasify this a Fantasy book. Also this book has talking Zombies. It makes it feel less like Night of the Living Dead and more like Return of the Living Dead. This book even had a climactic quote that made me tingle!

I was just pages away from finishing the book with a 4 1/2 star rating, even considering where to put it on my Top 5, when I hit the last page. That's right, HIT! I ran it over and found myself looking at the advertisements in the back of the book. I went back and reread the last page.
THAT'S IT!!! THAT'S NOT AN ENDING! IT DIDN'T EVEN GIVE CLOSURE!
I hate endings like that... In my rage, it lost a full star ....
