Plot

Caligula of the Stars

"Though he was later accused of every crime and sexual perversion in the galaxy, Hope Hubris began as an innocent. Because he defended his older sister against the violent lusts of a wealthy scion, Hope and his peasant family were forced to flee Callisto, one of the moons of Jupiter. Persued by bloodthirsty scions across the airless desert, they barely escaped with their lives. The illegal space bubble was overcrowded with refugees, all hoping to reach Jupiter for asylum.

But the space travelers had not reckoned on the terrible threat of high space - the pirates, barbaric men who rape, rob, and murder, with no thought but to satisfy their bestial appetites. It will take all Hope's ingenuity to survive, but the atrocities he witnesses will never die. There is only one way he can be rid of them..."

REVENGE!

Setting

This book starts on Callisto (one of Jupiter's Moons) and then moves off into space aboard a refugee ship called a 'bubble'. After several forays along the outside of the 'bubble' and an exciting encounter on the surface of Io (another moon of Jupiter), the main character at last arrives on the moonlet, Leda. I liked the author's descriptions of the planets. Offering the reader glimpses of their beauty but hinting at an ominous danger. The author portrays believable experiences of null-gee (weightlessness) and spin-gee (centrifugal). Since I have no experience in either, I can not speak for his accuracy.

Characters

The main character is Hope Hubris. A fifteen year old hispanic boy with the ability to understand people.

Spirit Hubris, Hope's younger sister. Although twelve, she is fanatically loyal to her brother and will do anything for him.

Helse Hubris, Hope's love interest. A young woman masquerading as a boy for safety but experienced in the harsher aspects of life.

Faith Hubris, Hope's older sister. An eighteen year old beauty without much common sense.

Overall

This is a very depressing story. Hope suffers throughout the entire story. In fact, the story probably ended because the writer could not think of further mental attrocities to submit his main character to. And I agree! I reached the end of the book and realised, it can't get much worse! The VERY end offered a smidgen of goodness to encourage readers to pick up the second book, but it in no way compensates for the inhumane treatment of Hope. Hope is mentally traumatized in every possible manner but he is left physically untouched.

I have to say the book was well written and a had a pervasive style, but the downward spiral of Hope took my pleasure with it.
