Reviews

Great book, excellent characters. A solid four stars. I loved Althalus from the opening chapter. He was dashing, funny and irreverant. A swashbuckling Robin Hood like character, without the good intentions. Though he and his band of merries utimately face down the baddies. Very funny, and at times poignant.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a refreshing look into the world of fantasy. The Characterization was amazing and the dialogue had the flare of a play. I read much of this book aloud and I believe it enhanced my appreciation of it. Unfortunately, the dialogue is still plagued by the Eddings' signature over-repetition. The Conflicts were believable but a little too easy.

GOOD

BAD

DialogueDialogue - "Be Nice" every three paragraphs
CharacterizationCharacterization - There is a familiarity with Dweia I don't like
StoryStory - The conflict is compartmentalized. I want one conflict ending at the end of the book.

This book took me 3 weeks to read and it wasn't worth the time I spent. It has great characters, well developed, but the plot is very lacking. There is no suspense--you always know the good guys are going to win. And 300 pages of battle? Too much. Will probably not read more by Eddings unless I get it from the library.
