Gripe #1: Slang I grew tired of the main character repeating for the reader what every line of slang meant. Especially since most of it was understandable. I would not have minded the occasional strange word explained but not over and over and over...
Gripe #2: Why Run? From the very beginning, the main character knew why she had to escape her father. SHE DIDN"T TELL US!! If I'm reading a first person book, I better be told what the character knows at that point. Otherwise, I feel cheated.
Gripe #3: K2 We are told that the planet is "somewhat larger" than earth, but there is no mention of a difference in gravity. I doubt a larger planet would have the same level of gravity as Earth.
Gripe #4: Genius? For a genetically created genius, it sure takes Cherijo a long time to think the trees could harbor the unkown contagion. I knew it as soon as I saw Alun Karas.
Gripe #5: Duncan Reever I think the author may have done too well of a job portraying the main character's feeling on this point. I HATED Reever. This guy is a complete @$$hole! I knew from the first encounter with him that he was no good. I know in my bones that he represents the long term love interest throughout the later books. He is the classic sympathetic, angst-ridden, emotionally-distant badboy that a woman subjected to a controlling, over-protective, emotionally-distant father would fall for.
Gripe #6: Kao Poor guy. I knew as soon as they started a relationship that he was going to die and that Reever would swoop in to take his place. I actually hope Kao's Clanbrother, Xonea, has a relathionship with Cherijo, thereby denying her to Reever.
Gripe #7a: Rape - Introdution I have so many problems with this scene that I need to break them up.
Gripe #7b: Rape - Enjoyed? I can't believe this was written by a woman. The idea that if you rape a woman, it will be okay as long as you keep repeating that she wanted it.
Because she'll enjoy it!
Gripe #7c: Rape - Her Reaction How could someone being raped by the most annoying and disliked person she knew be enjoyable? I had to check the cover to be sure this wasn't Kushiel's Dart!
Gripe #7d: Rape - His Excuse "I had to rape you so that I wouldn't kill you." Boy, have I heard that before. This is idiotic! I'm sure it is intended to show him as sympathetic (emotionally raped while physically raping), but I don't believe it. His later seizures are explained as a result of his fighting the Core for control of his body. I notice they don't start until after he blows his load!
Gripe #7e: Rape - Why? I don't understand having this scene at all. What purpose does it serve? To show her as a skanky whore that enjoys being raped by someone she hates? I doubt it! A shared experience of helplessness that serves to fuel a relationship? I hope not! Everything acheived by this scene could have been accomplished without rape. It could have at least served as some classic Soap Opera material. You Know! Have sex with the man you love, get raped by the man you hate, find out your pregnant, and worry over whose child it is!
